It picks up so much after page 200 thankfully.

The pace of the book has improved significantly. These last fifty pages have actually been easy and enjoyable to read.

I don't know how to feel. This book somehow feels like the pacing moves at a glacial pace yet so much happens. I am simultaneously bored to tears but I can't stop reading. It was the same with the first. It isn't bad, it is probably something with me, but I can't look away yet can't stand it at the same time.

I wish she would just forgive him already. The temper tantrums are getting boring.

This book is a page turner! I chose it for my book of the month selection because it seemed better than my other choices, but I wasn't that amped to read it. Then I got settled in, and I can't turn away. I get excited to come home from class just to see what is going to happen next.

Sorry I have been gone for so long recently. The truth is, I'm a recovering addict who relapsed a couple months ago and I am now back on the right track. The music part of this book is cool and all, but what this book really nails down is addiction. And not just the getting and using of drugs, but it discusses the void an addict feels and the paradox of self-absorption despite intense self-loathing.

I find it interesting that this is the third book in a row that has a protagonist from a background of poverty. I actually like that the book mentions how much more is at stake for Rin compared to her wealthier peers. Being poor means there is no room for error and you have to work ten times harder when compared to more privileged people.

I'm glad I've gotten to the point that descriptions of drug use no longer trigger cravings. Kingsolver does a great job of explaining the dilemma drug addicts go through. People dismiss addiction as just the result of bad choices, but they don't understand that when you are in pain, making the "good" choice could lose you your job. Like Demon said, drugs buy you time so you can survive another day.

I'm at a part where Demon is at a party that was a normal 4th of July party at first with beer and fireworks, but towards the end of the party Demon sees the people he grew up nodding out on heroin. I grew up in rural poverty, and this part crushed me because the same kids I had sleepovers in elementary school with were sticking needles in their arms in their 20s.

I swear this kid doesn't get a break. Things are maybe looking up at this point, but knowing how life is in these poor areas, I'm sure he's got more hardships ahead. I knew a few foster kids growing up and they had similar horror stories.

This book already made me cry. I grew up in rural poverty, and this book nails it. The main character reminds me of my son, red hair and all. I was also a young mom. I'm glad I got my act together and could be there for my son. This book made me realize just how important a mother is to their son, and while I already knew that in a matter-of-fact kind of way, this book made me feel it deeply.

This book just got really good in the last 40 pages. I wish there was a little more clarity on how the magic works in this book, but it's been a fun ride.

June keeps whining to Athena about her editor blowing her off and whines about how Athena has all these connections, but what I fail to understand is why she doesn't just straight up ASK Athena to put a word in for her. It sounds like June can't network for shit.

I'm honestly really loving this book. People were calling it boring, but I have been very entertained. This is a very unique take on the genre. The glossary in the back helps.
