I’m sure it’s a more modern reaction, but I don’t feel bad for this guy.

You could take almost any line of dialogue and give it to any other character, and it wouldn’t be noticeable. Even though these are famous people, the dialogue is so generic and lacks any personality.

This reminds me of the show “The Big Bang Theory” in that the characters are supposed to be geniuses, and yet they’re written for the lowest common denominator and over-explain to the point that they seem of barely average intelligence.

Either the writing was rushed or the editing wasn’t thorough. There was a missing word in this chapter, an extra (redundant) word in the previous chapter. It feels like the concept was greenlit quickly and rushed to print.

I… I could have done without reviewing this classic. Sometimes I wish I was a quitter.

Exposition is quite clunky. Far too much telling the reader rather than implying information through action. It feels like the author is trying to prove he knows something about each of these famous characters.

To get the witness to talk, Tolkien says he’s writing a mystery and thought this would make good material for it. If everyone thinks it’s a suicide, why would it make good material for a mystery? I feel like the witness would have wondered that. She doesn’t know they’re investigating it as a murder.

Lewis and Williams come across as haughty and prudish, thinking themselves above Crowley in every way. So much so that it’s off-putting and makes them seem overly confident in their own intelligence. I wish that had been dialed back because it makes our protagonists a lot less likable.
