You know it’s good when you simply must highlight an entire chapter (Sally)!! My goodness, Towles is amazing.

DNF. I saw a review that compared the author to Faulkner. If they meant the same unreadable prose, then I agree.

The first paragraph of the chapter “Hymn Singing” made me smile and it made me cry. I’m a Southern Baptist hymn singer, too, come from a long line of Southern Baptist hymn singers. I could relate to much of what Leslie said in that chapter, and had to dab my eyes all the way through — especially through the last section. Just beautiful.

Hmm. The story is moving a little too slow for my taste.

This is a bloated book, y’all. I’m fast losing interest ...

As the saying goes, the more things change the more they stay the same! So much focus on money.

I have made it further into the book than on my previous attempts, but I’m not promising I’ll finish this time. Reading it feels a bit like work.

I went through a long, slow-moving part, where it didn't hold my interest much. It's picked back up for the last quarter. I'm glad I didn't quit on it.

Getting better!

It is moving too slowly for me. I am starting to have the “I don’t really care how it ends” feeling. May turn out to be a DNF — we’ll see.

1st chapter has me hooked, reeled in, and hanging on the stringer!!

Annoyed at her choppy writing. Using fragments. Lots of them. (Yeah, like that.)

I haven’t read any of Cornwell’s books past 2005 or so, so I don’t know if it’s for effect in this book or if her writing has evolved into this. I’ll persevere for a while.

I’m struggling, think I will give up. Beautiful prose sometimes, other times such long sentences with so many commas that I have to read it two or three times to figure out the gist.
