Currently getting a LOT of reading done because my health issues have rendered me fairly immobile the past couple of weeks. Don’t be annoyed by the frequent reviews for a little 🙏🙈😅

Only a couple chapters in and this is already a gut punch 😦

The writing is magnificent, the language unbelievable. Every sentence is art, and at the same time nothing is taken entirely seriously. Weirdly reminiscent of Moby Dick in some ways (the last big classic I read) and in other ways so entirely unique. How to become a writer who can say so much with so little? How to master eloquent restraint?

Every story is profound and simple and human and nuanced…

Something about Japanese literature—when it’s translated well, there is nothing quite as graceful.

Would really like for this to be twice as long..:

I haven’t loved Taylor’s previous books but this is in the running for top five reads of the year

Truly enjoying this, much more than expected

Think I’ll be savoring this one…

Really enjoying this so far; reads like an understated Zadie Smith

It's interesting how Updike at this early stage of his career was so entirely cynical about life and love and meaning. In his later works you feel the sincerity he develops over time.

The writing, though is the same Updike--incredible, what he does with language.

Okay really enjoying this now! Classic Updike.

I’m going to have to revisit this later. Just not able to get immersed right now like I want to for such an epic.

Rereading this for some cozy comfort. It really is such a good book.

Half-way through and not loving this… to DNF or not to DNF… that is the question

So pleasantly surprised how nice the writing is so far!

Sometimes you just start a book and immediately know it’s going to be one to savor

Sometimes you get a few pages in and think, oh, I’d better savor this one.

Definitely the most unique book I’ve ever read. And one that reminds you how much you don’t know.

I’m making slow progress with this but it is utterly unique, brilliant, and hilarious to boot.

So far completely lovely.

Have to put other reading on pause to celebrate Korea’s first Nobel laureate in literature!
