Fascinating book especially when the author talks about race and patriarchy within the scientific fields.

Fascinating book. I never thought to look at this case through then lens of the political atmosphere for its time (1960s- civil rights, etc.)

Ch. 5 wasn't what I was expecting, but I suppose that's what is to be expected given that there are not a lot of women scientists, let alone diverse (BIPOC) scientists so the study of melanin hasn't been conducted in a way that's beneficial for us. It has only come as a result of experimentation to further the dominant race. It did get me asking the question though: what's the science behind my dark skin?

Wow, the final pages from ch. 4 (p.87-90) were incredible. I loved the talk about colonization. and wondering how different things may have turned out had Westerners (ie white men) based their 'scientific knowledge' on knowledge that Indigenous people already knew.

Part 4 got a bit better. Still a solid 3-star for me though. I'm just not as impressed with this book as I had hoped to be.

Still a ways to go but I'm calling it now- this is my favorite book of the month! While I can't relate to the ethnicity, I can relate to this book both in terms as reader and as a person of color.

I am more of an English/History nerd, but one of my reading goals for 2025 was to read a physics book. A lot of what's mentioned is going way over my head from the physics to the simple math involved (I read under my desk in school because I couldn't understand geometry or calculus). Regardless of all that, I am still having a fun time with this book. Annotating it helps.

About to start Part 4- 'The Eruption'. I'm hoping the book gets better from here on end. Parts 1-3 (pg.x-140) were pretty boring. I get that it's building up to what's about to happen, but it still wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be. So far this book is shaping up to be a 3-star read.

I'm about to start part 3. Part 2 was okay. Some of the chapters felt unnecessary. So far this book is just turning out to be a 3-star for me. I'll end up finishing it, but now that I'm on page 100, I don't have high hopes for it any longer.

This book is incredible! As a person of color I can relate to a lot of what she writes, especially when she talks about the lack of representation in the school books she was assigned. I didn't read any Latino or Indigenous authors growing up so as someone with those backgrounds, and dark skin, it made me feel left out a lot of times.

Part 1 was kind of boring. I have no real interest in logging history. Hoping to get to the really good stuff with the volcano and geology.

For a climate change book set in 1999 it's not so bad.
