I read this back when it was first released 40 years ago or so circa 1960. Today I'm tally appreciating the writing and the creativity in this first person story. The sophistication of the writing evolves with the development of the main character. I decided to reread because of personal circumstances.

Sim is starting The Killer Angels (The Civil War Trilogy, #2)
This is the best forward/preface to a book that I've ever read. Exacting and interesting.

This is a book to be savored and thus read slowly while thinking about the meaning of living and of dying. So I'm reading a chapter every few days which is unusual for me.

I can only read this slowly to savor the wisdom in the moment. Growing up in Michigan I read Mitch Albom's sports columns o=in the Detroit Free Press and have always valued his perspective and writing. This book affirms that.

Absolutely outstandingly written. The main actors are in the tradition of Andrea Norton. Great creativity.. a must read.

I was led to read this book after listening to the song "Cold Missouri Waters" by the super-folk musical group "Cry Cry Cry" and I'm glad Im reading this tragic piece of history. Definitely a sad story that is well reflected in the music.
