Oh no, Murakami has entered his wayward plot land for a hundred pages where the characters start wandering around with no clue what to do. Why does he do this? And why do I keep coming back? It was going so well!

Finished with Book 1 and am taking a break, but so far it’s perfectly weird and could be Murakami’s best yet if he can control it.

A very well-written and Gothic slow descent into madness with a poor payoff— undeniable overtones of feminism(and repressed sapphism) are integrated into the story well, but the ending needed much, much more.

The library wants their book back. I’ve been slacking.

“Gods have not Died in Vain” approximates many of the ideas of the collection: a dying overpopulated earth with dwindling resources, a singularity, uploading consciousnesses, and what it means to be alive. A dark and more likely close future than space travel.

“Thoughts and Prayers” is a fantastic story about the future evil of internet trolls preying upon victims of gun violence. Scary and all too real.

Tokarczuk just described someone as a “gelatinous orb of potential”, and I have a new favorite term for my students.

Knausgard has just used the word minutiae. Quite clever, sir…

Never a good sign when you’re thinking—what is Knausgard going on about now? He went from the sublime to time to anatomy to art to Borges to religion; the sideshow diversion in the earlier books are becoming monstrosities and losing their effectiveness.
