The Christmas Day entry got me like 🥹

It feels a bit like cheating when half the book is in Spanish and half (the part I’m reading) in English.

Lordy. This book suffers from serious “The Natives Were Peaceful and Prosperous Until The Mean Europeans Arrived” Syndrome.

ADVICE NEEDED: If I like Tennyson, Seamus Heaney, and Wendell Berry, where should I start with Mary Oliver?

Plays fast and loose with theological matters (as is typical of the early 20th century). Parents who are trying to catechize their kids will have to make a lot of detours.

I’ve GOT to note that this was written in 1924 (unedited and unabridged), and he refers to The Great War as “World War I.” Not even “The First World War,” just straight-up WWI.
And it boggles mind that *apparently* it was standard practice for 19th century children to ONLY be taught American history. Hello???

Did not remember how much of a cycle path Zane is. I generally don't think the mark of a good plot twist is unpredictability, but when you've read the book before and you STILL don't see it coming... That's impressive.

See, this is why I love waiting to revisit a book until I’ve forgotten most of it. Have I read this before? Yes. Do I regularly recommend and gift it to people? Yes. Did the events of Chapter 38 just leave me SHOOK? Yes.

My chosen audiobook to keep me focused while learning to sew. It’s not at all what I expected and I’m so glad.

This book is something of a slog. Not super clear on the central conflict, and if there are any sort of stakes to character development, they're undercut by the fact that these futuristic humans are virtually immortal. I don't want to DNF, but I need to resume my Sander-thon.
