I can’t contain my enthusiasm for this book - it is SO useful for folks who are thinking about links between participatory tech culture, feminism, and social power. So far it’s helping me frame the kind of work I do as “critical making” — thinking about participatory workshops, ethnography, and prototyping as a site of intervention, activism, and design research.

Highly recommend this book. Astra Taylor lays out the history of how democratic institutions were developed in the US (and why many of them are actually deeply undemocratic). Neoliberalism has transformed our political and economic systems, undermining fundamental freedoms and equality. She's frank about the scale of these challenges while maintaining optimism – better worlds do exist, & we can imagine alternatives.

Honestly this book has been a struggle to read. Has anyone else read Kristeva and could recommend a companion text/commentary?
