I got my start in the small, organic faith churches of western Canada, and it was good, but I needed the kindness of the conservative Southern Baptist pastors’ wives, and I needed the Mennonites to teach me about pacifism and thrift, and I needed the megachurch’s passion, the intense studying of newly reformed friends, the mysticism of my charismatic roots, and the dessert abbas and ammas. I hold it all inside.

I didn't learn how to lament and grieve, how to pray and be in community until I learned that God could be trusted. God is against the evil and suffering in the world. He is not the origin of evil nor does He "use" evil as a means to justify some cosmic end. Rather, God fights evil.

I couldn't trust God if I suspected God was behind our deepest griefs and injustices.

I will always pray as if this one thing is true: God is for us. And it’s worthwhile to keep knocking.
