Michael B. I have often found humor in the fact that colonial nations were literally plundering wealth from the new world, employing sailorsunder conditions that might benefit from unionization, turned around and engaged in a powerful campaign to prove to the world that pirates are all evil becasue they "steal".

Rediker also mentions "an ancient sea robber who had been captured and brought before Alexander the Great, who asked him “what he meant by keeping hostile possession of the sea.” The pirate responded with “bold pride”: “What thou meanest by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, whilst thou who dost it with a great fleet art styled emperor.”"
And this was from Alexander's time.
