Marquise added a status update
In today's episode of Improvements GR Sorely Needs But Won't Implement, we have the need for turning off comments under individual reviews. Or at least restrict them to who can comment.

Not just due to negative comments or trolling, though that's the primary reason to need this. Sometimes, you keep getting comments on reviews from 8-10 years ago you don't remember or not think the same you said then anymore.

TL *Humaning the Best She Can* I'm back to not getting all of my notifications, just some

Caroline Strange. In account settings, if you have the box ticked that restricts commenting to friends (commenting can be restricted but not turned off), the restriction is automatically applied to all reviews, past and future. If you're getting comments on those old reviews anyway, something's wrong. :[

message 3: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Bramwell I’d like to add the ability to reply to comments on the app. I can only do it if I get on the computer but I only use GR through the app.

But now I’m off to find your oldest reviews and comment on them. 😆

message 4: by Meishuu (new)

Meishuu Agreed. Sometimes I see comments from someone in your old reviews and feel like replying and then I realize it’s a 10 year old one 😂 sorry

message 5: by Fred (new)

Fred Jenkins Sometimes old reviews fro several years back pop up in my feed, probably because somebody commented on them. Then I don't get a lot of current stuff from GR friends.

message 6: by Rain (new)

Rain I miss so many comments, makes me feel bad… but at least we’re all in this GR frustration together!

I meant for individual reviews, not a blanket restriction/disabling option for all reviews.

Like, if I have 2-3 reviews that keep getting trolled or too many comments and I'd like to turn off comments for that one without affecting comments for the rest of my reviews. Other social platforms have that option to choose to enable/disable comments per post, and that's what I'd like for GR.

That's all we can get. No solutions, but complaining together is kind of cathartic at least. :)

Yeah, that's one annoyance that I'd want an individual enable/disable comments option instead of the site-wide enable/disable option that GR currently offers.

Morphing_kashi Do you ever think of your old reviews like museum displays, someone passes through and thinks 'hmm, I'd like to comment on this historical piece'.

Hehehe, feel free to! 😂 Seriously, if you wish to, do it.

The direct reply with quotes option? Yeah, the app doesn't let us, we have to @ the person we're replying that...

But the app is useless overall. Maybe good for posting reading progress updates and 'liking' reviews on a lazy hour...

That's for all of us, periodic nuisance.

Hahaha! What a brilliant way to put it, Morphy! 😂

Indeed, I do think of them like that. Not all, but many of them, and sometimes I'm embarrassed by what I said/thought.

But I don't think of deleting them, no. It's like altering my past. It might not be today's me, but it was past me.

~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ See, way before GR ever changed the notifications process, you use to be able to do this.. You could turn off comments on a particular review or status update. You could even stop following comments on another's review or status if you wanted.. Now you can't. When they changed auto notifications for us, they also took away our power on what we want and don't want to receive on the platform.. You know the status update and review workaround I gave you a few weeks ago? Well, now I found that they've also removed the poll comments notifications. This is true for group polls and profile community polls as well, but now, only the creator of that poll will be the only one to get notified if someone comments. But others who may comment/check that notify box to follow the poll discussion, will not get a notification any longer, when someone comments. They'll have to manually go to that poll EVERY TIME to be able to see the discussion.. Unfortunately, there is no workaround for this one.. Sorry guys..

Anyone who says or still thinks that this disruption in community engagement on this site, is not a purposeful act done by AmaNazi/GR, are either idiots or are privy to their purpose behind this.

Aaaaagh! I should've known. The site is going worse and worse, I couldn't set up my own place for my reviews fast enough. :(

Did they ever have the ability to actually turn off comments on individual reviews as opposed to simply ticking off the 'notify me when people comment' box? Because the latter is entirely different, and the former is what I was talking about. I never saw that option here, and I've been here since 2011...

~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ Early on they had it, briefly, then they moved it to just blocking all comments on ALL of your reviews, but then just unchecking the notify me box for reviews you no longer want to follow..

Ugh! They get rid of the most useful featues. :'(

I misread your status update. :/ :/ I thought you were saying we already do have that ability. I agree it would be useful, and I'm sure most would prefer being able to restrict some but not others.

Caroline ~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ wrote: "See, before GR changed the notifications process, you use to be able to to do this.. You could turn off comments on a particular review or status update."

When was this? We have been, and still can, turn off notifications of new comments, but we've never been allowed to turn off the ability for people to comment on individual reviews and statuses. Pre-2013, the feature to restrict commenting in any way didn't exist. In 2013, shortly before Amazon bought GR (i.e., back when staff sometimes instituted user suggestions), I joined the Feedback group to make a post asking GR to consider giving users the option to turn off, or at least restrict, commenting ability. One of the staff (Patrick, for anyone reading this who remembers the group) responded and said he'd mulled over the same thing and offered to propose the suggestion to developers. They ended up adding it. For those people who didn't want to blanket-restrict but instead wanted to restrict on a specific review receiving excessive harassment, they had the option to ask staff to restrict that one review. I doubt they still will do that now just because CS no longer truly cares about users. Bottom line: It's been black and white: We've had either restriction-free commenting with no ability to control (pre-2013) or the blanket-restriction option (2013 and later), but we've never had the ability to individually restrict. For context: I'm an active and interactive user who's logged in every day, minus a skipped day here and there, since 2013.

"You could even stop following comments on another's review or status if you wanted."

You can still do this. I turn off comment notifications on others' content almost every day. If it's not working for you, it's a bug.

 ~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ @Caroline

I had this ability for a brief time I noticed it, I used it at least twice.. I have been a member since 2009 and I remember briefly, right after I joined that it allowed me to do this, then sometime when I tried to do it again, it didn't.. So I don't know if this was a ghost test or what, to see if the feature was compatible with the site or not? IDK.. All I know is that I was able to use it twice and then I couldn't anymore.. So again, don't know what was up with that.

Now, because of the chaos of notifications, when I uncheck that box to no longer get updates on a status or review, I still seem to get updates when people comment on that status or review, even though I unchecked the box... So it's a mess and clearly not working.

It's one of the things I envy Twitter's interface for. There used to be a private circle of friends on Twitter that was eliminated too, that allowed you to post things that only your closest circle would see and not the rest of your friends/the userbase at large.

That's another feature I'd love, the ability to post things only your Top Friends could see. After all, not everyone that has the label of "friend" here is a friend.

Ok. I created my account in 2010 but only used it casually for the first few years (logged in maybe once a week and didn't interact). So this happened right before my time on the site. They very well may have been testing. How interesting that they were thinking along these lines so early on. l wish they'd gone ahead with the feature. Maybe it took too much work, whereas a blanket restriction is easier. They certainly aren't going to be doing anything special now. I think at this point GR has only a skeleton crew since its priority is to encourage Amazon book sales. :[

I remember that feature on Twitter, and I appreciated it. I deleted my account after Musk eliminated the feature (fairly soon after buying the site). It was so helpful for controlling harassment, a protection that was especially important for certain categories of users. Do you (or anyone with an account on the site) know whether Bluesky offers it? I had an account there for only a day or two before deleting and didn't explore much.

I'd also like the ability to restrict stuff to Top Friends. Users really had so many excellent feature suggestions way back when, but GR ignored most. I assume it was just too much work to institute them; at least that may have been part of the reason. It'd be so nice if The Story Graph would give us all these things we want, but I'm not a programmer, and that site is run by a single person. She's busy, and I don't know how advanced her tech skills are.

Oh, and yes, this happens to me too--in both directions--but it's mostly been working. (With that said, I haven't been getting notifications for this thread despite having ticked the box to be notified. :/ :/ )

 ~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ @ Caroline

Try to find this status on your actual updates feed page, and then comment from there. Once you do this, it keeps that notify me box checked for you.

When you post a review or status update of your own, you need to post a comment on them as well, after you check the notify me box. This way you'll get all updates on new comments for your posts and reviews.. Do this on pictures you post on your profile or in groups as well..

Everyone else's posts and reviews, you'll have to 👍 and initially comment from your updates feed page first. After that, you'll continue to be notified on their posts of new comments

Unfortunately, there is no workaround for group or community polls. Even though you may check that box on a poll, once you leave that poll page, the box will uncheck itself.. Only the creator of a poll will get notified when people comment on it.

These are the workarounds myself and a fellow mod on the platform figured out, and we're just trying to let as many people know about them, if they want to stay connected with their friends or followers on this site.

Please pass along if you can.😇
