"Amid the massed heads of the uncaring dead and the disturbed devout, Harrowhawk's eyes found hers, and that disdainful mask slipped in its blankness; her lips thinned. The people clamored. Gideon winked."

A very interesting start; they went for the risky move of being jargon-dense and full of flavor before breaking down any of it. I'll be curious how they intend to explain most of this in the chapters to come.

I have a copy of this and I've been meaning to read it for years. Is it good so far? How is the prose?

@reader I'm loving it a lot. I had initially finished Mexican Gothic and then IMMEDIATELY jumped into this, and I think I jarred myself because they are completely different writers. But Muir melds humor, elevated language, and a bizarre magical/sci-fi/something universe really well. It's also a perfect example of third person limited perspective, wherein Gideon isn't speaking TO YOU, but you very much understand her flavor and perspective and the experiences she's having without having her specifically gnaw your ear off. Which makes me very interested for how the sequels, named by other characters, will feel.
