Finally finished book one. He seems to consist of two persons: a brilliant sceptic and a stuffy martinet—a fabulous combination.

"Apology for Raymond Sebond" is one of the best by Montaigne; I found a lot to think about in it. He was a complicated man, was he not? Congratulations on continuing to read the "Essays."

Thank you. I found myself stuck with Apology but sped up to 30 pages per day, and it works well - today finished book 2. It is still far from your temp with Montaigne, but hardly I can digest it faster. He was so amazingly complicated and incorporated so much from that exuberant and turbulent epoch, that I can't help but adore his writing even when I dislike what is written.
