Not certain what the exact question is here, so I'll just say that GM is full of morally questionable characters and almost no one gets out alive. I did want someone to survive, though, just so there was a pair of eyes through which to see the new world.

Hi, Peter Manale.
Judging by reviews, readers have varied responses, including the moment they experience the 'twist'. A few complete the book without seeing it, others get it much sooner. I can't remember if a character actually points it out - it's a long time since I read it!

The blind watchman
There's a man at the end of your street who wears dark glasses because he has no eyes. When you walk home after school each day, the jar of marbles in his upstairs window always seems to be watching you.

That's a lot of questions! I'll take the one about 'what's changed' to keep it simple.
I'd love to never make another writing mistake.
That seems unlikely, though, as I make them every time I touch the keyboard. It's a hassle of course, but the reality is that all those howlers and blunders have been gold in terms of developing better work.
That said, I try to take longer in the planning stages these days, to avoid running into road blocks and dead ends once the writing itself begins. I avoid embarking on ideas that don't absolutely fascinate me. In the writing itself, I try to be less visible and let the story be the strongest voice.
Because I've wasted so much energy on doubt, rage and frustration over the years, I've learnt that suffering doesn't help the process. Writing ought to be a happy process, right? So, I'm still working on that...

Oops, Goodreads! It's questions about MEAT this month! Ask me this one another time...

I will ask my publisher. I suspect the idea was that we keep it small and special by limiting the print run, but enough water may have gone under the bridge now that he's willing to release an eBook...

Well, I do, Mandy, but you know how plans can be.
I have at least two more novellas outlined, both of which will further reveal the cataclysm and how/if it can be dealt with. I do also hope to return to a character from one of the first two tales and follow them further into the changing world.
However, and it's a big however, an author is a bit like a flower in that we follow the sun that shines on us. It may be that other work - more popular, better paid, of greater visibility - is more likely to draw that benevolent light. If so, I will turn in that direction.
Whatever the case, though, I will keep dropping news here, on my blog and on Twitter and Facebook. When things 'happen', you'll know!
Thanks for stopping by with the good vibes...

Hi, Peter.
Sorry for the delay in responding - only just seen your question.
Was it the two blog posts from the 21st/22nd May? Those are the only mention of the free Clownload I've made on Goodreads. Either way, it's definitely late and I can't account for why. I'm sorry you didn't get a notification on a day when you could have made use of it.
Even so, Clown Wars is a ridiculously low £2.08 or $2.99 depending where you buy it. I hope you'll consider giving it a whirl. If not, next time we promote the book, I will be sharing the info here as I always do.
Thanks for letting me know and all the best to you,
Joseph

Thanks, Kim! I'm absolutely delighted you enjoyed it.
Bit of trivia: Stephen King rather liked it, too. My publisher sent him a copy before it was published back in 2007 - that's where the SK blurb for the cover originated.
Happy reading and let me know if you ever pick up any of my other titles...
