Don Preston I cuss at myself, get up from the computer, get a snack, return with it to the computer. This usually results in a short burst. If I block again, I feel "permitted" to give it a try another day. Flexibility.
Don Preston It's different for everyone, I'm sure. I enjoy the flexibility. I can start. I can stop. I can immerse myself. I can walk away for weeks at a time. I can change the story as much as I want.

Don Preston First, I retire from gainful employment. Then I rattle around for a few years, annoying my wife. I bounce from interest to interest. Don Preston The novel began as a short story about Aiden, a poor soul with severe OCD problems. It was to be the first of an anthology of shorts about people with peculiar characteristics. As I wrote, I introduced a character who would tell Aiden when he would die. The result was so striking that I realized I had a new and unexpected protagonist, a character who could carry an entire novel. Does anyone recall a '50s TV show called The Millionaire?
