Nan Mykel While treating incarcerated sex offenders I learned so many things that I wished the public knew/understood. After 12 or 13 years (depending on how you're counting) I retired but maintained my interest and curiositry. Not only did I have my experience treating sex offenders (including incest offenders), but I had also experienced the damage resulting therefrom, as a survivor. I had observed that offenders deny to themselves and others that any harm was involved. Therefore I realized that it would be easy to discount my remarks. So...I set about reviewing the research literature and comparing those resuolts with my own internal observations. Fortunately I had a journal to which I could turn for my most intimate reflections, dreams and drawings. My section addressed to the community contained two chapters, and well, I have included my Table of Contents, so you can see. I need to add that I got new insights to my own experience as I went along. The last page was written during the proofreading process, and came as much a surprise to me as to others.
Nan Mykel Keep a dated journal. Include nighttime dreams, quotes that move you, include feelings, fantasies, memories, introspections, poems, cite source of quoted materials; if you're working towards fiction, try and describe interesting folks you observe in the coffee show, maybe even fantasize what their life is like. Record overheard expressions of speech. Date these entries and maintain them in consecutive order. Dress up your journal(s) with art work and/or collage.
Nan Mykel To tell the truth, it was because of my copyeditor in another state. She edited at the same time I was still writing. We used the Dropbox system where she could see what I'd written and made comments while I was adding new material. I really resisted learning the system (I was initially yelling and kicking) but her almost immediate response and waiting for the next paragraph as I simultaneously reconsidered the last kept me on my toes. (She is a friend--see photo this site--and was also retired and interested).
Nan Mykel I'm currently letting people know I published a book. Since I'm 79, if I live through that I'm thinking about a shorter book called "Humor Amid Our Angst."
Thanks for asking.
