It's rumored I was a breech birth, which is no way to start a relationship with Mom. Although a little unnerving, a fitting metaphor for my life might be a roller coaster.

I attended 11 schools in 12 years (3 of them in 1952), two universities (UF and GSU), and experienced contrasting sets of grandparents. My father's parents were salt of the earth folks (although somewhat incest-ridden) and my mother's parents were finger bowl Dixiecrats from whom my mother eloped to join my alcoholic father. (She had trouble with her mother, also).

I really resisted learning the system (I was initially yelling and kicking) but her almost immediate response and waiting for the next paragraph as I simultaneously reconsidered the last kept me on my toes. Include nighttime dreams, quotes that move you, include feelings, fantasies, memories, introspections, poems, cite source of quoted materials; if you're working towards fiction, try and describe interesting folks you observe in the coffee show, maybe even fantasize what their life is like. Record overheard expressions of speech. Date these entries and maintain them in consecutive order. Dress up your journal(s) with art work and/or collage.

NAN MEETS THE MEDUSA ARTIST

The cover of my book showcases a sculpture of "the misunderstood" monster Medusa, by artist Sarah (Herman) Love, and last month I met the artist and was able to purchase the sculpture, which is in the form of a vase.
