Mark Evans I have total sympathy for those afflicted by this. I'm no expert, but I would suggest the block could come from too many conflicting ideas choking up the channel between imagination and page.
If I ever found myself in that situation I would start writing nursery rhymes and change the lines so at least I was subtly engaging in creative writing. Hope this helps!
Mark Evans Being constantly surprised by what my imagination conjures up when I ask it to help me out. When people ask me 'how did you come up with that scene?' I can only shrug. My brain made me do it!
Mark Evans Persevere.
Writers write; thinkers think.
Does there need to be a greater reward other than creating a world?
Read.
Read.
Read.
Don't get it right, get it written.
Mark Evans I'm taking a break from writing to catch up on reading; I have a tottering tower of books to get through! No doubt I'll return to word wrangling before long...
Mark Evans Thankfully, I don't suffer from writer's block. The mundane answer is the more you write, the more you can write. Working on something as long as a novel requires a lot of effort at the beginning, but once it gains its own momentum there's no stopping it.
I will say that I get inspiration for 'stories' every day - from newspaper articles, snippets of conversation, daydreaming, movies. The more you turn nuggets of stories into fully fledged yarns the better you get at it. I suppose it's a bit like a comedian will automatically find the humour in everything they encounter; writers find the yarn in every experience.
Mark Evans I never wanted to write a straight sequel to my first novel, so I waited until I discovered an interesting way to return to the world/universe I had created with Mrs God. When the idea came to me it made such sense that I began sketching the broad outline of Trinity straight away. And the name of the book was one of the first decisions. The rule of three loomed large throughout the 14 months it took from beginning Draft #1 to finishing Final Proof.
