Kevin J. Fitzgerald I think the best thing about being a writer is getting to dream. It's constantly viewing things through the "what if?" lens. One of my favorite moments as a writer is, when you're working on something, and you "stumble into" something that you didn't even know yourself - like a character's background, or how a particular situation might be resolved. To me, it's all about dreaming and imagination and discovery.
Kevin J. Fitzgerald Just write. That may sound simple, but it isn't. Writers (whether of books, poetry, music, films) can often labor under the pressure that - when they come to the page, or pick up their instrument - they have to create a masterpiece. But, I don't think that's true. To me, the key is: write, Write, WRITE! Even if it's garbage... JUST PUT SOMETHING DOWN! You can come back and fix it later (that's what editing is for!). But, writing is like a muscle; the more you USE it, the stronger it gets... The LESS you use it, the weaker it becomes. So, just write. Your masterpiece will come. For now, just conquer that page!
Kevin J. Fitzgerald I'm working on a few things: I'm cleaning up a trilogy I wrote called "Paladin." It was originally one work, but it was 240k words long! So, I broke it up into instalments. That has inevitably required some re-structuring. I've also got about 5 short stories I'm submitting to a compilation. I've started drafting Book 2 of the "UnAlive" series. And, I also just submitted a bunch of loglines to Hallmark Channel and SYFY Network... So, we'll see if anything happens with those!
Kevin J. Fitzgerald I usually go out and take a good walk. When I'm deep into writing, I really require a space devoted to myself, anyway. That's because - sometimes when I write - I need to be able to get up and move around; even have conversations between characters out loud. Going for a walk ALWAYS seems to clear my head. I carry a voice recorder or notepad with me so that - when the ideas start flowing again - I can quickly put them down.
