When you're not writing, read.
If you want to buy a book on writing, then always check the number and type of books the author has written. There's quite a few authors out there that only sell books on writing. They may be very good at what they do, but unless you want to write books on writing as well, they may not be the best tutors.
If you *do* want to get a book on writing, then the best one available is "On Writing" by Stephen King. I reckon he's sold enough books to have a valid opinion.

"The Diaries of a Sociopathic Vicar" - which is something of a departure from Runaway's Railway! In between times, I'm gradually fleshing out ideas to another book in the Runaway's Railways series.

My most recent book (Runaway's River) is a sequel to my first book (Runaway's Railway) and extends on those ideas. The first book came from waiting on a snowy platform for a train that had been delayed.
