Feeling festive, he invited a neighbor over for dinner. Despite being a bit tough and over-cooked, his neighbor was delicious.

I need an early morning hour, coffee, and a western on the TV. That seems to be the key for me, whether it is researching for a book, mapping out characters or a plot line, or actually writing a book.

Honestly, I was inspired while walking on my family's property in the Greenhorn Mountains in Kern County, California. Part of the property has a trail or road that was used to haul people and supplies from the Central Valley to the Kern River gold fields. I started thinking about that road and the people, how it was connected to the California Gold Rush, and how it led to the development of Kern County. Those ideas bounced around inside my head for half a year until I dedicated the time to write the book.

Currently, I am working on the second book of The Golden Empire Series, which is historical fiction...a western of sorts. I'm also working on a follow-up book to Bootleggers, Booze, and Busts.

This isn't my fulltime job, so, being able to write is an escape for me. I have the flexibility to write on my free time and step outside of my day-to-day life. In many ways, it is a stress reliever, and I love the development of characters and plots.

When I have hit a wall while writing I usually deal with the situation in one of several ways. There are times I will go to the beginning of the chapter and read what I have written, and that triggers new ideas. Other times I will look at the storyline map I create to see where I want to go with the plot. And sometimes I just need to back away from writing and take a walk, play some games, watch TV or just do something that lets my brain work out the block.
