Hiya Maria, thanks for your question. I was lucky enough to be asked by my publisher to try something about the Titanic and that's how my career began as a children's writer. My ghost-writing experience also proved handy as it was great practice regarding researching and presenting someone's life story ... that is, their personal history. I do have a great love for history - along with English, it was always a favourite of mine in school. So, from the Titanic I went to WWII and then to the siege of Derry. I'm currently working on my battle of the Boyne and it is fair to say that all my ideas, at the moment, for future books are based on episodes/characters from history. I would like to expand to different genres over the next couple of years but, for now, I love researching a complicated story from history and finding a way to present it to the younger reader. Hope that answered your question alright. Best wishes, Nicola

That is a bloomin' good question, Denise. I think, most of all, I'm hoping to inspire a young reader to i) read more books and ii) learn more about history in the general hope that they learn to question things for themselves.
The actual historic subject or context is important to me. I love history and I enjoy researching something and trying to find a way to make it come alive and connect with today's reader. I've just finished my second draft of my third children's novel, about the Siege of Derry, and that was my challenge to bring 1688-9 alive and make it interesting.
But, yes, I'd be lying if I didn't hope that the story would present something more than itself. I'd hope that readers would learn more about themselves and for themselves - if that makes sense.

Thanks Nicola for the reply. I love the 'learn to question things for themselves' bit. It is something I have been thinking a lot about recently, in relation to our educational system. I think we need to work hard, as adults, on the critical thinking skills we require of our young people.
I think your passion for detailed research comes across vividly in your books, and it is easy to visualise the places you create. This is a skill you have in buckets.
I agree, it is important that the story presents more than a story...isn't the that point of a good book! A book that stays with you long after the last page is a hit as far as I am concerned.
Thanks for the reply Nicola
