This was just one of those books that I felt was written especially for me and me alone. Writers' memoirs are a favourite with me anyway but this has one of the best pieces on writing/being a writer that I've ever read. I also loved the pieces about

| An uncomfortable read that irritates, thanks to how bloody relevant it is today. | |

| I loved the art and the premise of the story but there was just a little bit too much self-conscious navel-gazing for me. Ultimately there was much love here, two-fold, from his girlfriend and her son, and I could not understand Peters wandering off ...more | |

| Not my usual read, this was a gift. At the very least, it's a wonderful selection of work from New Zealand illustrators. The pages sing out with glorious colour and imagination alongside the hypnotic poem from Colquhoun. ...more | |

| A slim memoir recounting the experiences of two young inexperienced English sisters who end up tending to horrific wounds and injuries to British and French soldiers in France 1914. It is a sobering read, I was appalled at the atrocities committed ag ...more | |

| Apart from reading 'Dune' years ago, I never read this genre but I saw an advertisement for the up and coming Ryan Gosling film, accompanied by lots of comments praising the book sky high. And I am now one of those commentators. I had only ever seen ...more | |

| I do feel a bit guilty about my three stars and perhaps it's unfair as my rating is probably the result of reading this immediately after finishing the compelling Estelle Roberts's memoir about being a medium. The latter's voice was immediate and vib ...more | |

HOpe I'm doing this right, it's my first message on goodreads. I've never read him as I just don't do horror/terror;), and had stupidly put of On Writing for years, even after hearing how good it was, and I must say i thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd read it again and again,I think. And I might even try some of his earlier stuff too, under supervision!! Happy Easter!
Can't say I was ever a great fan of Stephen King, but I loved 'Misery' - it made me laugh out loud, especially the bits about the typewriter falling to bits. (I once had a typewriter that did the same to me after millions of words!) And 'On Writing' was just genius. Still think of it - wish I still had the book. (Probably lent it to someone and never got it back!)
