The best thing about being a writer is the absolute freedom to do whatever you want whenever you want. There is no boss telling you what or when to write; there is nobody telling you how to do anything. Of course, total freedom is as much a challenge as anything else, and you do have to know how to discipline yourself!

I think it's really important to just write without censoring or judging what you are writing at the time, i.e. just get into the flow of it and leave the polishing and refining till later. You also have to find whatever works for you, i.e. some writers like to just write whenever the inspiration hits them and some like to set aside a specific time each day to write. For me, writing in the early morning before work is usually best, I'm at my most creative then.

I am a psychotherapist and I have worked in several different treatment centers for addiction. That has provided a great deal of inspiration for my next book.

For some reason, I often get inspired by a place. For instance, my upcoming book is inspired by a small beach town close to where I live; Secret Witness was inspired by visiting Bristol and the Camera Obscura there; One for Sorrow, two for Joy, was inspired by the trip round the world I took in 1994.

I'm working on a new book called "Lunada Bay", which is my first book set in America, where I now live. I have a bare bones story mapped out, and it will have some themes in it related to addiction and mental disorders. It will probably be another Psychological Crime Thriller type novel, as that is what I love to write most of all!
