Ugh! I go back to research. As an historian, my happy place is digging for the details of someone's life, and understanding the world they lived in. Usually that gets me out of the writing funk I might fall into sometimes. Chocolate helps, too!

Bringing to life the stories of women whose lives have faded from view, or who we know about. If I can inspire readers, I am in heaven!

Believe in yourself and the stories you want to tell. Accept that it may be tough going, sometimes, but the joy and satisfaction from making that commitment to yourself is worth it. Try to accept criticism gracefully—it is so hard, I know—but be willing to take it in. It doesn't mean the criticism is accurate, but be willing to listen. Sometimes criticism is a gift, sometimes it isn't. Be kind to yourself! And write!

I am just beginning to think about my next subject. I have a few women I am looking at. Stay tuned!

The women I write about inspire me. I feel compelled to write about them because of their incredible courage, commitment, and vision, and the way they have changed the world to be a better place. I think that if I feel motivated and inspired by them, then readers will, too!

I had long known about and deeply admired Civil Rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and her story stuck with me through the years I was working on other biographies. Finally, I decided to start researching her life and see where it took me. I became hooked, just like I have with Harriet Tubman and Rosemary Kennedy. I feel privileged to have been able to write about Hamer - her story is important for all Americans to know. She is an inspiration!
