I've been lucky- I've never had writer's block and I attribute that to my never having tried keeping a journal or setting myself any daily writing goal or any such thing. I never have forced myself to write, so I've never had writer's block. I think it's that simple.

The best thing about being a writer is you make carloads of money (I first typed "careloads") and become famous- People stop you on the street and say.. "Aren't you the famous writer?" -- Uh. Actually, I'm being a trifle sarcastic here. I never had anyone stop me and ask me that- Well, actually that's not true. Once I was visiting my son's grade school and he and I were just entering the school when a kid came out and said "Aren't you the famous writer?" "Why, yes, I am," I replied, somewhat surprised at the young age of my first fan. The young man looked confused. "No," he said, "I meant him." And he pointed to my son, who had just had his fiction "published" in the school library.... But except for that mother-proud/writer-humiliated incident, Nada. The best thing is that you get to express some of what you think and feel and have people read and think about it.

Don't keep a journal. (I know that's kind of shocking and I know a journal is really key for many writers. If it works for you, keep at it. But there are many of us, I include myself, for whom writing a journal takes all the sap out of things. If I force myself to write, I kill the imp that pushes me to want to write. I'm sorry I can't be clearer about this. But I have not writing schedule, no journaling practice. I write when I feel I have something to say. Fortunately, I feel that way often.
