For me, it helps to have a change of scenery. It may be as simple as going for a long walk with my dog, or leaving town for a few days on a writing retreat. Just getting away from the usual distractions helps get me thinking again. Not taking my phone with me while I walk, or not listening to music in the car while I drive, allowing the silence to do its work is one of the best things for me. Often our lives are so cluttered, it can be hard for inspiration to break through the noise!

My best advice is simply to write, and to find other people who write. My writers' group has been the most valuable resource in my writing life. When the muse refused to descend, they kept me writing anyway. And when I wasn't sure where (if anywhere) my book was going, they listened to me read a chapter from it and gave me the gift of outside opinions. The writing life can be an isolating one, but it doesn't have to be. Find a local writers' group if you can. And if you can't, go on a group writing retreat or join a group online. The input (and commiseration) of other writers is invaluable.
