I found you through your blog and a search on "mid-list writers." The blog you did on that subject in 2012 spoke directly to me described my writing career, too. After some minor successes by traditional publisher dropped me. After a lot of years away from writing, I have just self-published a novel, and am finding it a mixed blessing. Have you gone this route with your writing? Just wanted to touch base.

Catherine Czerkawska Hi Cindy, good to hear from you. Surprisingly, a few years ago, I found a small traditional publisher called Saraband, almost by chance, and they have published four of my novels and several pieces of non-fiction too. They are publishing a new non-fiction book next year - The Last Lancer - about my Polish father's family and the grandfather I never met. But I have also carried on self publishing because I had more work than my publisher could deal with - three novels, some plays and many short stories. They're all on Amazon, and the trad published books are elsewhere too. Good luck with your self publishing. I think the trick is to keep going and get quite a lot of work 'out there'. I can format my eBooks myself and am lucky that my husband is an artist so I have cover images - but I paid for some help with formatting the paperbacks. All best wishes, Catherine

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Catherine Czerkawska As somebody told me years ago, the only way to learn how to write is to write. I thought he was a bit harsh, but it turned out to be true. You have to read a lot and write a lot. Everything else is incidental.
