I’m a novelist, historian and experienced professional playwright, living and working in Scotland.

I write warm, intelligent and grown-up stories - some historical, some contemporary and some a mixture of both. I have more than 100 hours of BBC radio drama to my name as well as many professional theatre productions.

My fiction and non-fiction was previously published by Saraband, now by Dyrock Publishing, and some of my plays by Nick Hern Books.

The Jewel, published in May 2016 is a luscious historical novel, bringing to glorious life the dramatic years of Jean Armour and Robert Burns's courtship and their tempestuous, married life against a background simmering with political intrigue and turmoil. I found you through your blog and a search on "mid-list writers." The blog you did on that subject in 2012 spoke directly to me described my writing career, too. After some minor successes by traditional publisher dropped me. After a lot of years away from writing, I have just self-published a novel, and am finding it a mixed blessing. Surprisingly, a few years ago, I found a small traditional publisher called Saraband, almost by chance, and they have published four of my novels and several pieces of non-fiction too. They are publishing a new non-fiction book next year - The Last Lancer - about my Polish father's family and the grandfather I never met. But I have also carried on self publishing because I had more work than my publisher could deal with - three novels, some plays and many short stories. They're all on Amazon, and the trad published books are elsewhere too. Good luck with your self publishing. I think the trick is to keep going and get quite a lot of work 'out there'. I can format my eBooks myself and am lucky that my husband is an artist so I have cover images - but I paid for some help with formatting the paperbacks. All best wishes, Catherine (less)

Wild flower Inspiration


 We have a traditional cottage garden, here in our two hundred year old house - reasonably tidy, with lots of flowers, but never ever 'manicured' to within an inch of its life. We have birds and bees and butterflies galore. Frogs too.
