Tony Bartelme There are lots of little tricks. But here are a couple:
1. Start with the smallest detail you can, then expand on it. Write about a brick, or the mortar, not the wall.
2. Pretend you're arguing with someone about the issue you want to write about.
Tony Bartelme Thanks, Laura, for your kind words. It's indeed a privilege to live and write in Charleston, a place with a twisted and beautiful history. Good fodder for fiction and non-fiction. I first met the protagonist for my book, Send Forth the Healing Sun, in Charleston, when he worked and taught at the local medical university. I was immediately blown away by both his charisma and the stories he told of operating in Africa with a makeshift tree saw. I eventually met his wife, Carin, who told me of their African love story. But in the end, I decided this was a book because it exposed a real problem that few are talking about, the shortage of surgeons in poor countries. It was a joy to research and write this book, which will be revised and published in the United States in March 2017 under a new title, A Surgeon in the Village. Beacon Press is doing the book. Thanks again for your interest, and all the best,
Tony
