Laura Rogers
Laura Rogers asked Tony Bartelme:

First, let me congratulate you on being such an accomplished writer. Second, congratulations on being a writer with the good fortune to live and work in Charleston. Finally, let me thank you for being a Goodreads author. Isn't it wonderful that GR's exposes readers to so many talented authors we would never have had the good fortune to find otherwise? How did you come upon this story? It is inspiring.

Tony Bartelme Thanks, Laura, for your kind words. It's indeed a privilege to live and write in Charleston, a place with a twisted and beautiful history. Good fodder for fiction and non-fiction. I first met the protagonist for my book, Send Forth the Healing Sun, in Charleston, when he worked and taught at the local medical university. I was immediately blown away by both his charisma and the stories he told of operating in Africa with a makeshift tree saw. I eventually met his wife, Carin, who told me of their African love story. But in the end, I decided this was a book because it exposed a real problem that few are talking about, the shortage of surgeons in poor countries. It was a joy to research and write this book, which will be revised and published in the United States in March 2017 under a new title, A Surgeon in the Village. Beacon Press is doing the book. Thanks again for your interest, and all the best,
Tony
