Music. The right soundtrack can help reset the scene in my head and allows me to begin the creative flow process again. My biggest challenge when writing in the historical fiction genre is selecting the right dialect, vocabulary, and tone for my characters. Sometimes I agonize for hours over a small section of dialog just to get it right.

Kris and I are currently working on another historical piece set in the late 1700's and early 1800's in the Ohio Territory. It's inspired by the true story of my great-great-great-great-grandfather, "Indian Billy" Dragoo, who was captured by the Shawnee as a young boy and raised by the Ottawa. The story will be narrated by his adopted Ottawa brother. You're gonna love this book!

That's easy! I just imagine what it would be like to listen to a great storyteller talk about the actual historical topic! In Farewell the Innocent, the main character, Wil Harleck, is the storyteller. It's really fun to just imagine you're sitting around the fireplace in his parlor listening to him tell the story about how the war changed his whole life.

My original inspiration to write about the Civil War can be traced back to the Ken Burns documentary and Michael Shaara's "Killer Angels." In 2005, I wanted to begin writing a Civil War piece that presented a soldier's experience in a new and different way. When I started my research, I discovered the fascinating story of the 2nd Virginia Infantry Rgt. I contacted a reenactor whose great grandfather was in the regiment, and he sent me some records. From there it didn't take much to fall in love with the true story. The biggest challenge after that was figuring out how to tell the story well using the fictional characters.
