I miss seeing kids play out in the streets. I miss that everyone knew everyone in the neighborhood. There was a sense of community.

Sometimes the ideas come from what hurts me. Other times, from what infuriates me. What injustices do you see in the world and what do you have to say about them? What difference do you want to make? Writing is an act of activism. I like using my writing as a way to push for social change and social justice.

Read a lot. Write a lot. And submit a lot. Work on your craft and nurture your talent, but also, research the business of writing. Sometimes we focus too much on the craft, but you must keep in mind that writing is also a business, so you must learn how it works in order for you to be able to have a shot at having a long-term career as a professional writer. I give myself breaks and go do other stuff I love, like gardening or watching movies or re-reading my favorite books. Once my "creative" battery is recharged, I return to the writing.

One difference is the length-the YA is shorter. I shortened the scenes or removed scenes that were not appropriate for this age group. I deleted the adult perspective and simplified the language. One addition I did make to the YA version was including a few new scenes not found in the original. Thanks for reading!
