Sit down and write! But also, study the mechanics of writing. Know grammar rules. Learn about dialogue. Show, don't tell. And before you pass "go," please read Stephen King's memoir, "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft." It's amazing.

I have written a middle grade book called, "At Last, A Cast." It's completely written, and it's 16 chapters, about 22,000 words. But ... I have to rewrite it! Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite! It needs more length and more dialogue.

Anything can trigger a story book or blog idea. Something someone says, something I see, something my dog does, something my children say ... anything. Not every idea is developed, but they all get jotted down into a little notebook I keep in my purse.

I keep the back of my SUV covered with bumper stickers. One day, I joked to my teenage son that my car is extremely recognizable, and he deadpanned back at me, "Mom, no one notices you or your car." It was funny, and it got me thinking. What would make a car memorable? I thought of art cars, which are popular in Houston (and in a few other cities). I sat down and wrote about a man who has a plain life and a plain car. "Arthur Zarr's Amazing Art Car" is the result, and it launches in November 2015.
