Hi Sara! That's a great question, that I don't really have the best answer for. Truly, I couldn't say. Things just pop into my head from time to time and I think "that could be a great story." People watching helps too. Sometimes if I'm on the bus or in my car and I see a couple walking down the street I'll think "how did they happen?" and I'll invent some elaborate backstory. Thanks so much for your question!

Mostly by watching life happen around me. I feel like a lot of my writing begins as conversations, and grows around those exchanges. So I spend a lot of time thinking about how people talk, how they react, how they choose to express themselves.
