Distractions

I’ve been busy lately. Mostly busy avoiding current events and news and this dreadfully contentious election. To be frank, too much ofthis type of stimulus gives me anxiety. I did not always have anxieties, they have come to me through time and my own experiences. Anxiety is what plunged me back into writing. I find creative pursuits to be the best therapy for dealing with it. Creativity gives me

“If love came easy, it wouldn't mean half so much.”
Beau North, Longbourn's Songbird

“Your pain is your own until you put it to music, then it belongs to everyone. You'll find it lightens the load.”
Beau North, Longbourn's Songbird

“As soon as she stepped in the door, the wonderful smell of books hit her, easing the tension from her neck and shoulders. This was a place of magic to her, where one selection could make you weep with despair and another might make you laugh for days. It was a world of possibility, intelligence, and inspiration, and she’d always secretly considered herself to be queen of this particular kingdom.”

“In one section of the Vindication, Wollstonecraft writes that she’s disgusted with how her culture keeps women down. She sees females being most valued by power-hungry men, who encourage them to serve as weak, ignorant, pretty playthings. It’s a perpetuating cycle, because men, Wollstonecraft writes, “have increased that inferiority till women are almost sunk below the standard of rational creatures.” She concludes, “I think the female world oppressed.” We might say that, across this volume’s dazzling stories—and alongside the beyond-compare Austen herself—it’s a belief that must seem eminently rational. Fortunately, then, as now, such a cultural diagnosis precludes neither hope nor joy.”
Christina Boyd, Rational Creatures

“ELINOR DASHWOOD After losing her father, home, and the gentleman she loves, Miss Dashwood’s altruism is nothing short of heroic.”
Christina Boyd, Rational Creatures
