Bob D'Angelo Read. Read. Read. Read anything and everything you can get your hands on. Take note of a writer's style, his voice, how he or she approaches a story. Then tailor a voice of your own. You can borrow from other writers, but as you move along in your writing career, you will find your own style and voice.

And, oh yeah -- read.
Bob D'Angelo Blank pages don't bother me. I get up, walk around the house, do a few things to distract myself, and then sit down and think. Something usually comes after that. It's the old habits gleaned from working on a sports desk at a metropolitan newspaper with tight deadlines. At some point, you've gotta move, so clear your mind and forge ahead.
Bob D'Angelo I knew about Ferguson when I worked in his hometown, at the Stuart (FL) News, in the 1980s, and always wanted to write something about him that was more than just an article. What jump-started me was a book by my former colleague at The Tampa Tribune, Bill Chastain. Bill wrote "Jackrabbit: The Story of Clint Castleberry and the Improbable 1942 Georgia Tech Football Season." Castleberry was a phenomenal star at Georgia Tech (Bill's alma mater), but was killed during World War II. The parallels between him and Ferguson were similar; while Ferguson wasn't killed on D-Day, the severe injury he suffered impacted his life and eventually led to his death 10 years later.
