David Rogers The most unexpected and gratifying thing has been to receive stories from readers in response to reading my story. My story is mostly made of war correspondence that is unusually well written, with an emotional and moral clarity. I think readers connect to that and want to share similar powerful stories many of which are astonishing. War is intense and so are the stories of war.
David Rogers Two different projects merged to become the book. The first was to research an old envelope to see how much information I could extract out of the sender, the receiver and the date. There was a story there but of limited interest. The second was to read my father’s WWII letters. In reading them, I found there was a great, well written story but I needed to extract it. I wrote this up for family and friends one of whom was an author who strongly encouraged me to write a book. I then merged the two stories and contextualized the letters adding a teaser and an enlightened revisitation at the end tie it all together.
