There was this one day, a long time ago, that I still remember—a day several years back when all I wanted to do was give up and go back to the law. To resell my soul to the big city, big firm lifestyle and put the dream behind me. I swear to God, contrived as this might sound, that night I cracked open a fortune cookie. Truth be told, I pulverized it over the table in a fit of childish frustration. The point is, the little scrap of paper left behind literally said, Don't ever give up. I still kick myself for not playing the lottery numbers on the other side because just a few days later I received the first of multiple contract offers on my first book.
Seriously, I still have the fortune. I keep it tacked to the wall over my writing desk. I'll show you if you want.
Look, there are going to be times when family and friends and even common sense tell you to stop. You'll have days when you find yourself doubting everything you do. This, my friend, is normal. In fact, if you go through the motions without ever enduring those feelings, I would say you've probably sold yourself short.
Deep down, you know how high a bar to set for yourself. You know your worth and capabilities. Fight the temptation to settle for less. If you're not polished enough yet, then keep working. If you have certain strengths, use them. If you have certain weaknesses, use them even more!
Respect yourself. You hold inside all the validation you'll ever need.
Respect the language. It's your weapon of choice. Mistreat it or wield it sloppily, and it will kill you.
Respect your reader. They deserve your absolute best. Every moment your words spend fueling a reader's imagination means another moment of magic created and another sliver of joy released into the world.

At the moment, I'm juggling a pair of exciting new projects. As of last week, I've wrapped up my first pass on a romance/fantasy/good-old-fashioned-adventure novel. And now, I'm turning my attention to the finishing touches on the first in a series of novels chronicling the genesis and evolution of the Crimson Confessions.

On occasion, I've been known to seek out a semi-resistant surface on which to pound my forehead repeatedly. Eventually, the block crumbles. Or, you know, unconsciousness. Either way, a short break from the problem usually helps.
