I watch old movies, mutter, and try not to kick myself. Then I let a few friends read and respond to my latest draft. Or I describe the plot thus far to anyone who'll listen. The hope is that in telling the story over and over, viable solutions will bubble to the surface or magically present themselves on little burgundy velvet idea pillows in my brain.

Do not, under any circumstance, ignore the voices in your head. Get off the phone, pull the car over, and hop out of the shower if you need to and write it all down. It may come streaming into your brain like some kind of otherworldly transcript or gossip when you least expect it and you need to respect that shizzle. Get it down. Everything else can wait.

For my next challenge I thought it would be fun to try a romance series since my tendency is to write sex-positive characters exploring variations on desire with-a-happy-ending anyway, so, I'm on it.

I was looking for my next taboo subject to explore with equal parts depth and fun when a conversation with my acupuncturist sparked an idea. I also thought it would be a good challenge to try my hand at a five decade-long, multi-generation family unraveling since--at this point in my life--it seems to be going on all around me. The longer I wrote the less the story became about the illicitness of the main characters' predicament and more about the trappings of expectation, small-minded judgement, and a family's need to forgive and accept with grace and humor.
