Hilary Dartt My favorite source of inspiration came in the form of a real-life good samaritan named Rowdy who stopped to help me after someone rear-ended me at an intersection. He was very good-looking, and when he saw all my kids in the car he said, "Are these all YOUR kids?" Haha. I find inspiration everywhere - from people whose stories I imagine when I see them in public to things I imagine myself or my friends doing in situations I hear about.
Hilary Dartt I'm working on a new series, The Garden Club series. The first book is about a news reporter, Jasmine, who made a pact with her high school sweetheart, Parker, that they'd meet up again at age thirty and date for a month to see if they still clicked. When they get back together, she finds that she doesn't feel the same way she used to - especially because she has feelings for her new co-worker, Hudson. She's determined to give Parker a chance but doesn't want to miss her chance with Hudson.
Hilary Dartt Write! Write some more. And keep writing. Don't be afraid to experiment, to try new things, or to put yourself out there. And make friends with other authors and writers. We're all in this together.
Hilary Dartt There are two best things about being a writer, I think! The first is that I get to work from home, in my pjs. The second is that I get to enjoy the fun adventures my characters experience. I can live vicariously through them as they're wading through online dating or kissing someone they like for the first time. It's so much fun!
Hilary Dartt I use this great outlining program, Snowflake Pro, which helps me outline my books before I write them. So I rarely get stuck once I sit down to write. When I do, I remember two pieces of advice. The first is from Annie Lamott: "bird by bird." Basically, she says, you just keep writing. It's okay to write a bad first draft, as long as you get the words onto paper. Scene by scene. I forget who the second piece of advice came from, but it's to keep asking, "Then what?" These three things have kept me moving forward in my first drafts!
