Janet Ursel My first favourite books were the Chronicles of Narnia, so that probably plays into it a lot. I have always read very widely, but I've always loved the greater sweep of imagination that speculative fiction allows and the way that by framing old issues in an unfamiliar situation we can deactivate some knee-jerk reactions and get people thinking more deeply. I guess that is my goal more than anything else: to get people to think more deeply and look at things from a different angle. I don't set out with a message to tell though. I just try to tell a really good story, and the messages that live in my heart will come out by themselves, I think. There are few things worse than preachy fiction.

Also, because I've always been a generalist, interested in a little of everything, I'm a jack of all trades and master of none. (Okay, so I'm something of a grammar expert. Not something that gets many people excited.) But when I create my own world, I am automatically the foremost expert on that world. If you want to be top of the class, there's nothing like creating your own class and cutting off enrollment.
