Diana Khalil I was fortunate to grow up in the small city of Port Arthur, Tx. Living there always made me feel as if I was in a Huckleberry Finn novel. One of my favorite past times was watching the tugboats go by while sitting on the granite rocks near the canal. The water was always mysterious and frightening to me. My mother would show us the whirl winds, and we’d talk about how they could suck in a swimmer who dared to swim across. And then there was the draw bridge. It was fearful to me driving over it. I’d always be afraid it would open and we’d fall in into the murky water below. The most mysterious thing about the canal was the stories the elder kids told about it. They’d claim a drowned boy was discovered in it, and no one found out who did it. I never knew if the story was true, but it was true to me as a small child. That was in my mind when I’d pedal my bike past the canal. I guess one could say it was a mysterious part of my life that could be a plot for a story, the drowned boy found in the canal.
Diana Khalil I'm a passionate romanticist at heart. I love people who love from the heart, authentic true love, and it shows in their actions. I'm a believer that this love still exists, and everyone desires to find it.
Because of who I am, my favorite fictional couple is Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester. Many say that Jane Eyre was a feminist. But to me, she was a human. An orphan in search of her identity. It made her real. She was cautious about giving her love to Mr. Rochester, though she truly loved him, because she knew she had to love herself before she could love him. And despite Mr. Rochester's assurance that he loved her for who she was, he understood her need for growth. When she returned, his love for her was unchanged. This is why the two are my favorite characters. Jane Eyre was a woman needing to establish herself in a man's world, and Mr. Rochester was a confident man proving he could give it to her without hindrance.
Diana Khalil First of all, when you're born and raised in Texas, you grow to have an admiration for its history and love for the state. Second, I have three children who were medical students, and the challenges they faced in medical school was quite interesting, enough to write about. And finally, I have an internal belief that we are all interconnected. We do share the same moon, earth, and sun. And, we all have the same emotions that we share. I felt I needed to write this on paper.
Diana Khalil I have completed a new novel, BEYOND SKIN, about a girl who is a seventh generation Texas with deep roots in the South. She is raised by her eccentric grandmother after her parents die in a fishing accident in the Gulf. Pansy is a pessimistic introvert. But once she enters medical school, her life quickly changes. She is placed in a multi- cultured tight knit community with the 'cream of the crop,' and she must now come to terms with old beliefs instilled within her, her own mortality, and purpose in life. Life will never be the same for her afterward.
Diana Khalil Never give up. If you imagine a story to tell, write it. It could become a best seller.
Diana Khalil I usually sleep on it. My imagination gets into play, and I write on it.
Diana Khalil The best thing about being a writer is that it permits one to stimulate the mind. Writing is an exercise of the mind that betters with time. Also, for me, it is a relaxation. I can type, with my hot cup of tea, and make a character.
Diana Khalil I am from a family of story tellers. As a child, I loved listening to stories told by my elders. These stories were passed down from earlier generations. One day I started thinking what if things had happened differently. In our world anything is possible. Thus a story was born.
