D. Allen Rutherford Managing the "behind the scenes" editing, publication task, and promotion of the novels. For every week I spend writing a novel, I spend six weeks doing the other things that must be accomplished in order to get a novel onto the shelf for our readers to enjoy.
D. Allen Rutherford I like watching scifi thrillers. Not long ago I was watching one of the later and more popular werewolf movies (will not say which one) and when the characters were morphing I kept thinking this is BS, and then I began thinking if it were possible for a person to actually experience a transgenic mutation. After doing a little research I discovered that it was not only possible but scientist were experimenting in the area of cross-species transgenesis wherein they are actually producing human-animal hybrids. I suddenly got an idea for a story that followed a "what if" scenario where this concept could not only occur in nature but "what if" someone attempted to exploit this area of science for some nefarious purpose.
D. Allen Rutherford Humm, that is a tough question. I like taking topics that are controversial, such as fringe science and building stories around them that not only educate the reader but generates debate along moral or ethical issues associated with the "what if" scenarios if the fringe science had no oversight. Then I just envision characters playing out one of the "what if" scenarios.
D. Allen Rutherford I'm writing the Wargs Trilogy. "Curse of Misty Hollow" is the first installment and was just recently published and due out through Amazon and B&N within the next week or two. I'm currently writing the second volume "Blood Moon Rising" which I plan to submit to the publisher by December 2015 for publication by February 2016.
D. Allen Rutherford The same advice I received from other authors... once you have an idea in your head, just sit down and start writing. Don't get bogged down in trying to make everything perfect in your first draft; don't try to be perfect in your grammar; don't try to be perfect in your syntax... Just write and let your thoughts flow onto the paper. There will be plenty of time to edit later. If you follow this bit of advice it will go a long way in avoiding writer's block as well.
D. Allen Rutherford I can't say I actually experience writer's block. Before I sit down to write a story/novel I have a clear picture in my head as to what the story is about and how I want it to play out. When developing the plot for the story I journal thoughts and ideas, names of characters, descriptions of place, etc. I sometimes scan the internet for pictures & images that reflect the visual images of who/what I want to portray in the story. These help create references for me to draw upon when writing. When I do get to a cross-road in the story and I'm not sure which way I want to take the storyline, I sleep on it. When I'm laying in bed I try to visualize the story in my head as if it were a movie and watch how it plays out. Then the next morning I start writing it down.
D. Allen Rutherford Being able to tell a story that is grounded in actual science or history in such a way that not only entertains the reader but spurs debate related to moral and ethical issues associated with the underlying elements of the story.
