Sarah Andersen So many! I really like Shen Comix, Webcomic Name by Alex Norris, Gemma Correll, Bianca Xunise, Close Your Eyes Look Over The Mountain, and Alison Zai to name a few.
For FANGS I referenced Kiriko Nananan, Emily Carroll, and Tillie Walden, all incredible talents.
Sarah Andersen I really like nonfiction and horror. Right now I'm reading "Into the Drowning Deep" by Mira Grant and it's a great level of creepiness.
Sarah Andersen I look at "Emotions Explained With Buff Dudes" by Shen all the time. His problem solving in his comics is very clever and it actually helps me format ideas as well.
Sarah Andersen NYC and Copenhagen will always feel like home to me.
Sarah Andersen Great question as I just upgraded from the Cintiq 13HD to the Cintiq 24 Pro after working on the 13HD for around 5 years. It was a lot of money but I have to say the investment was worth it and the 24 Pro has truly sped up my working process. I draw in Photoshop.
FANGS was actually made in Procreate on my iPad. If you're not into spending for the Cintiq/desktop/photoshop combo I'd highly recommend this as a (slightly cheaper) alternative. It works like a charm.
Sarah Andersen Ask yourself lots of questions! "How do I feel about x? And why?"
Give yourself room to answer honestly and search for what feels truthful in your sentiments.
Artistically, look at lots and lots of art and see what you feel drawn to. Take your favorite elements and bring it into your own work.
Sarah Andersen I wasn't writing Scribbles because I was meeting the deadline for a project called Cheshire Crossing, and I had all this untapped creative writing energy. In my notebook I began this little series of jokes between a vampire and a werewolf sitting in a bar, and it was very pun-y and cutesy. But I love horror, romance, and all things macabre so something about me latched onto the idea and wanted to develop it further. After Cheshire ended I developed it into a full series.
Sarah Andersen Thank you Seanelly! FANGS was a pretty big undertaking and I wound up missing a few months of Scribbles comics because of it. I think the big challenge was that I really didn't know if it'd be worth it. In some ways FANGS didn't even feel like work, it felt like I was skipping my day job to play, and I felt guilty! It was a huge, huge sigh of relief when FANGS wound up being more successful than I thought it would be. I think there's something to be said about an artist's enjoyment of a project really shining through in the end.
Sarah Andersen I just discovered a podcast of spooky stories called "Radio Rental." I'm obsessed.
Sarah Andersen I have an idea for an allegory about quarantine called "Stella." It's a queer love story that takes place between two girls quarantined in isolated space pods waiting until they can get onto a mothership. Unlike FANGS/Scribbles, it's more of a narrative and less a comedy.
I can't start working on it for another half year or so because I'm doing Scribbles #4 and a secret illustration project. But it is in development and I'm very excited.
Sarah Andersen It still surprises me! I'm incredibly grateful and I'm actually glad it happened to me when I was younger, because I'm not sure older me would be able to even process it, haha.
I would tell younger me to not be so much of a perfectionist and spend more time enjoying and being present in life. Work isn't everything!
Sarah Andersen Thank you so much!
I have indeed worked in other styles before. I studied illustration in college so it's in my wheel house. I illustrated a graphic novel called Cheshire Crossing which has art that more closely resembles FANGS.
As an artist I'm not very committed to a style. I tend to shift based on the needs of the project and adjust from there. Sarah's Scribbles for example is deliberately simple.
Sarah Andersen Rabbits are indeed amazingly sweet pets! The one in my series is based off a childhood pet named Sunshine. The black cat is based off of the cat I have now, Harley. She doesn't know she's the star of a webcomic series!
Sarah Andersen Yes! I'm working on #4 right now.
Sarah Andersen In comic form there will not be a sequel as I see FANGS as a stand alone piece and a narrative that takes place conclusively in one take.
Unlike a lot of my other work however, I could see FANGS being a live action show. I'd love to develop Jimmy's wolf pack more. So maybe there will be something in the future!
Sarah Andersen One thing I wanted to emphasize in FANGS is that it's possible to love someone who is not only flawed, but very different from yourself. I really liked that Elsie and Jimmy could bond over a mutual feeling of freakishness, but because their "conditions" are so vastly different, there's a lot they have to navigate and learn about each other. That tension was a lot of fun for me to play with.

Sarah Andersen I think the one that really captures the heart of the series is the one where Elsie lists all of her flaws and Jimmy tells her he loves her.
I also really like the "Eat Him/Date Him" comic.
