It was sparked by a discussion with two friends, both Emergency Room doctors at the VA. Like many books, it evolved over time and ended up drawing upon many of my own experiences: as a child growing up in the UK in a small village where everyone had a memory/experience of war, and where there were veterans of both world wars and even a German ex-POW still living with us: my own obsession with Romans and Celts as a child; my son's love of a particular video war game and his interest in Romans, Celts and battlefield models; listening and trying to comprehend the way our modern conflicts are reported and fought, and how they are both similar and different to wars of the past.

I'm currently working on another middle grade novel set in France in World War One.
