When A. E. Conran was Mikey’s age she had a tin of tiny Roman and Celtic warriors, which she never finished painting, and a desire to time travel, which remains with her still.

A fan of historical fiction by Rosemary Sutcliff and Henry Treece, she also heard stories from her parents, grandparents, and their friends about living through, and returning from, war.

In addition to writing middle grade novels, A. E. Conran works as a freelance editor, bookseller, book talker, and children’s book club facilitator. She lives with her family in Northern California.

Her middle grade novel, The Lost Celt, was awarded a Gold Medal by the Military Writers Society of America.

Like many books, it evolved over time and ended up drawing upon many of my own experiences: as a child growing up in the UK in a small village where everyone had a memory/experience of war, and where there were veterans of both world wars and even a German ex-POW still living with us: my own obsession with Romans and Celts as a child; my son's love of a particular video war game and his interest in Romans, Celts and battlefield models; listening and trying to comprehend the way our modern conflicts are reported and fought, and how they are both similar and different to wars of the past.(less)

“Tall, pale-skinned, and trained for warfare since childhood, the Celts were fearsome. They spiked up their hair with lime, covered their bodies in dyes or tattoos, ripped off their clothes in battle, and fought totally butt-naked, so mad on war and glory that no one could stop them. The Romans were terrified of the Celts, but they admired them too. Too bad Roman discipline won out in the end. But not tonight... tonight is going to be massive—awesome beyond awesomeness—and my Celts are going to win!”
