J.R. Bale I, like a great many people, had become frustrated with the state of American politics, particularly the extreme polarization and domination by moneyed special interests. Phoenix in the Middle of the Road is an expression of that frustation. It was a way to express my concerns without preaching. First and foemost, it had to be a good story about people, not cardboard cutouts.
J.R. Bale I usually work on multiple stories at the same time. However, my current priority project is a science fiction novel, comprised of five discrete stories, linked together. Sorry, no more spoilers than that.
J.R. Bale I think there are two types of writer's block: the "what will I write" form and the "how do I solve this plot point" form.
For the first type, don't shy away. Write something. Anything. Yes, relax if it helps, but don't hide.
For the latter type, I usually switch to writing something else. It keeps my mind engaged, while also giving my subconscious some time to work on the problem. I think walking away from either challenge is a mistake. Writer's block is more often an excuse for lack of productivity than a real phenomenon.
