Ralph Lavelle For the first part of the trip, I didn't stay up-to-date with any web/tech stuff at all. I concentrated on writing the book, and on learning Greek, etc. But as the time approached to look for a job in Dublin, halfway through the travels, I felt so disconnected and unhappy about work that I vowed not to allow myself become so removed from work again.

On the second half of our trip, with no book to write, I worked on my site, www.JayJayWords.com, which made me au courant with web stuff, and I felt better about getting back into it again.
Ralph Lavelle Writers like Paddy Leigh Fermor and Paul Theroux opened my eyes to the possibilites of travel writing. I knew I'd be going on my travel for a long time, so that then became the idea for the latest book.
Ralph Lavelle It's so easy to write something, publish it to Amazon (or Goodreads), that I'd feel bad not doing so. That's my inspiration. That, and the people I've met on my travels, and the places I've seen.
Ralph Lavelle A memoir of a recent 19-month trip to Europe with my family. It's going to be called either "European Odyssey in the JavaScript Age" or "The Great Affair". The latter is from a quote I found by Robert Louis Stevenson, who apparently was a bit of a traveler.
Ralph Lavelle Don't listen to people like me giving you advice. What do I know?
Ralph Lavelle Having other people - friends, relatives -mention the book as if it was a real book like "The Stranger" or "The Pillars of Hercules", when in fact I never think of it like that. Maybe I should. It's a thrill, anyway, when that happens.
Ralph Lavelle I read about someone like Stephen King, who bangs out (or did, before his terrible accident with the van) 2,000 words every day. If he can do that, I can do 500, which is more than enough for my ambitions.
